Lam Thao Superphosphate & Chemical Plant, located in Phu Tho Province, was one of the earliest large-scale industrial projects established to support Vietnam’s agricultural development and the country’s emerging chemical industry. Construction commenced in 1959, and after nearly three years of development with assistance from Soviet experts, the plant officially commenced operations in June 1962. At the time, it was regarded as one of the most modern and largest fertilizer plants in Southeast Asia, marking an important milestone in the development of Vietnam’s fertilizer industry.
The project was developed with assistance from the Soviet Union, which provided technical expertise and support during the construction and early operation of the plant. Publicly available historical sources do not provide a reliable figure for the plant’s original total investment or a detailed percentage breakdown between foreign and domestic financing. The initial production facilities included a sulfuric acid line with a capacity of approximately 40,000 tonnes per year and a superphosphate line with an initial capacity of approximately 10,000 tonnes per year.
Rather than being delivered under a modern EPC contract, the plant was developed through international technical cooperation, with Soviet specialists working alongside Vietnamese engineers and workers to establish production technology and operational capabilities. The Soviet assistance was particularly significant in enabling Vietnamese personnel to acquire and master fertilizer-production technologies during the plant’s early years.
Over the following decades, Lam Thao underwent several phases of investment, rehabilitation, technological upgrading, and capacity expansion. These developments progressively transformed the original facility into a diversified fertilizer and chemical production complex. Government development plans subsequently identified the expansion and modernization of Lam Thao Superphosphate and Chemical Plant as an important direction for increasing domestic fertilizer-production capacity and improving chemical-processing technologies.
Today, the project is associated with Lam Thao Fertilizers and Chemicals Joint Stock Company, formerly known as Lam Thao Superphosphate Factory. The company has developed substantial expertise in fertilizer and chemical production and remains an established participant in Vietnam’s chemical and fertilizer industry. Its long operating history, accumulated technical experience, and continued investment in technological modernization have contributed to its position as one of the notable fertilizer producers in Vietnam.
