SON LA HYDROPOWER PLANT

Son La Hydropower Plant

With an adjusted total investment of approximately VND 60.2 trillion, the Son La Hydropower Project was developed as a major national energy infrastructure project in Vietnam. The investment covered the construction of the hydropower plant, resettlement and relocation works, and transport infrastructure associated with the reservoir area. The project itself has an installed capacity of 2,400 MW, comprising six generating units, and plays a major role in supplying electricity to the national grid.

The project was financed through a combination of State budget funding and investment capital from Vietnam Electricity (EVN). Approximately VND 16.89 trillion was provided from the State budget, while EVN contributed approximately VND 43.31 trillion, representing the principal source of project financing. For the hydropower plant construction component specifically, EVN provided approximately VND 34.87 trillion, including investment in construction and associated project costs.

The project was implemented under the management of Vietnam Electricity (EVN), with the Da River Corporation serving as the main contractor. The construction involved Vietnamese engineering, construction and infrastructure capabilities, including specialized contractors responsible for major works such as the RCC dam. The project demonstrated Vietnam’s ability to mobilize domestic engineering and construction resources for a large-scale hydropower development and became one of the country’s most significant power infrastructure projects.
